Rape reported here last week; remains investigation

Monroe City Police received a report of a rape at approximately 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, in the Marion County portion of Monroe City.
An 18-year-old white female resident of rural Monroe County reported that she was raped by an unknown black assailant while staying overnight at the residence of a friend at Bellefield Apartments.
She reported that she woke up and the man was attacking her. Monroe City Police Chief Rick Stone said that there were at least three adults and one child staying in the unlocked apartment. No weapon was reported to be used. The alleged rapist was not a resident of Monroe City. Stone said there had been a party at the residence earlier in the evening.
She reported the rape to 911 at 8:13 a.m. She said she went to her mother’s house after being raped at 5:30 a.m. and before being treated and released at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
Stone said DNA samples were taken to the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Macon for analysis.
The rape remains under investigation by the state highway patrol and Monroe City Police Department.

Monroe City Police Report

The Monroe City Police Department responded to the following calls.
A dog was placed in the pound on Sept. 7.
There was a report of tires being slashed in front of the elementary school.
On Sept. 6 there was a report of a white car repeatedly speeding on South Chestnut. Although the vehicle was not located, extra patrols of the area were conducted.
A fight broke out at the 700 block of East Cleveland. One person left prior to officer arrival and statements were taken.
Jaymee N. Quinn was issued a citation for speeding on Sept. 5.
There was a report of a loud party at East Summer Street and the residents were advised to keep it down.
There was a report of knocking on outside walls and shining flashlights at Kendrick's Trailer Park, but nothing was located.On Sept. 4 there was a report of a panic alarm at Hardee's. A person hit the alarm because they could not remember the police department's phone number and needed to report somebody leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident.
Two dogs were at large at C&R Market. One was caught and taken to the pound.
On Sept. 3 there was a report of a subject threatening to damage a vehicle at the Gateway Inn. An officer monitored the vehicle and nothing happened.
A citation was issued to Victoria L. Doil for failure to register annually.
There was a report of a careless and imprudent driver and the subject already exited onto Highway 36 heading toward Hannibal.
On Sept. 2 a dog was placed in the pound.
On Sept. 1 police spoke with a subject referencing a possible parental kidnapping.
An alarm was going off at C&R Market but it was actually an electric wheelchair with a low battery.
Police are conducting a sexual assault investigation.

December trial set for man accused in Monroe City rape

Florencio Sarmiento, 34, of Gilmer, Texas, will face a jury trial date of Monday, Dec. 21 at the Marion County Courthouse in Palmyra for allegedly raping a woman at the Rainbow Hotel in Monroe City.
Sarmiento waived the right to hear information relating to the case during his arraignment Wednesday, Sept. 2 and entered a plea of not guilty through his interpreter.
The defendant is charged with two counts of second-degree assault and one count of armed criminal action.

Trial date set for Webb and Fuller

Charles E. Webb, 22, of Shelbyville and Donald Fuller III, 18, of Clarence, will face a trial date of Oct. 1 after pleading not guilty to second-degree assault.
Both cases have been moved to Ralls County Court in New London from Monroe County.
The men are accused of beating two men near Paris. One of the victims, Jerome D. Herrin, 23, of Madison, later died.
Michael R. Flowers, 22, of Macon, is scheduled for trial Jan. 12 in Monroe County. He has a criminal motion hearing scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1.
Lucas R. Summers of Macon is charged with first-degree assault is scheduled for a trial setting 1:30 p.m. Sept. 8 in Kirksville. He also had a change of venue.
