The Monroe City Police Department responded to the following calls. On Aug. 16 the manager of Stones Trailer Park complained of juveniles in the 500 block of West Boulder telling their unleashed Great Danes to attack people. The dogs chased the manager, several juveniles, and a lady carrying a baby. The reporting parties declined to press charges. The owner of the dogs was located and warned. On Aug. 15 a dog at large nearly bit someone at the 1100 block of Williams Drive. The dog was located, but could not be caught. The possible owners were not home. There was a report of an intoxicated subject passed out on Vine Street near Dugout Bar. Nothing was located upon arrival. There was a report of motorcycle racing through Kendrick's on Aug. 14. An officer spoke with the caller at arrival and she advised motorcycle was gone. Katherine K. Meinhardt was given a citation for speeding. A possibly stolen knife was recovered at Battlefield Apartments. Daniel R. Berhorst was given a summons for speeding. On Aug. 13 there was a report of a juvenile trespassing at the 400 block of First Street. The was a report of a subject inside of Wedge Bar. The person was visiting somebody working there, according to the log. William A. Hubbard was arrested for driving while revoked and a warrant for failure to obey judge's orders. Hubbard was unable to post bond. On Aug. 11 Robert L. Crabtree was arrested at Dos Primos for failure to obey judge's orders. Officers corralled hogs on the loose at Tyson Meat. A citation was issued to John Michael Corey Mayfield for not having an operator's license and failure to maintain financial responsibility. On Aug. 10 police checked on a stranded motorist 1.5 miles east of Route Z on US Highway 36 in Ralls County. The driver was leaving as the officer arrived. There was a report of property damage to a vehicle by an unknown subject.

Moberly man drowns at Mark Twain Lake
A Moberly man drowned after becoming entangled in his fishing net on the Mark Twain Lake Thursday afternoon near Victor in Monroe County. In its preliminary report, the Missouri State Water Patrol reported that William Kendall, 78, was standing in the bow of the boat using a cast net to catch bait. He fell overboard when his feet became caught in the net. He was not wearing a life-preserver. They found his body in 30 feet of water two hours later. It was Kendall’s birthday. A Missouri man who became entangled in a cast net and fell out of a fishing boat drowned on Thursday, his 78th birthday. The accident happened about 1:15 p.m. at Mark Twain Lake.

Palmyra man pleads guilty to federal charges

Shannon Maas entered a plea of guilty to federal charges of receipt and possession child pornography, Acting United States Attorney Michael W. Reap announced today. Maas, 32, Palmyra, plead guilty to one felony count of receipt of child pornography. He appeared before United States District Judge Donald J. Stohr. Maas received child pornography over the Internet and possessed child pornography on two different computers. Receipt of child pornography carries a maximum penalty of twenty years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000 and possession of child pornography carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000. Sentencing has been set for Friday, Oct. 30. This case is brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. Reap commended the work on the case the Palmyra Police Department, the Missouri Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) and the Regional Computer Crimes Education and Enforcement Group (RCCEEG); and Assistant United States Attorney Tiffany Becker, who is handling the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Arraignment date set for Sarmiento
Florencio Sarmiento, 35, of Gilmer, Texas, is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment after the victim of an alleged rape testified against him during a preliminary hearing Aug. 11 in Marion County Court. The victim failed to appear in the first scheduled preliminary hearing that was scheduled for July 28. A body attachment/capias warrant was ordered for her at the time and then withdrawn when she appeared during the rescheduled date. The court found probable cause and ordered Sarmiento to be bound over to circuit court for his arraignment 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2 at the Marion County Courthouse in Palmyra. He faces two counts of second-degree assault and one count of armed criminal action.
