Monroe City Police Report

Monroe City Police Chief Rick Stone reported the following activity for the past week.
Police assisted the Missouri State Highway Patrol in a search of a vehicle reported going westbound in the eastbound lane of U.S. 36. Police received a report of gunshots being fi red on the night of the Wedge fi re, but nothing was substantiated. Police reported that the shots came from the 300 block of First Street, but the subject left before the offi cer arrived.
James R. Cox was issued a summons for failure to fi le with the Department of Revenue and failure to maintain insurance on April 23. Police responded to a verbal domestic dispute on April 23 at Gateway Square apartments.
On April 23, police issued a summons to Darren J. Poppe for failure to stop for a school bus. On April 23, police received a report of skateboarders at the Knights of Columbus Hall again. Four skateboards were confi scated. Police received a report of an assault at 620 S. Monroe St. on April 23.
On April 29, police issued a summons to Sibyl D. Forest for failure to fi le annually with the Department of Revenue. On April 24, police received a report of juveniles fi ghting in South Park. Police spoke with the juveniles.
On April 24, police issued a city citation to Joseph D. Pugh for driving without a chauffeur’s/operator’s license.
On April 26, police received a report there was a fi ght at one of the local businesses, but police found the business closed when they arrived.
Cody E. Shippy was issued a summons for speeding and no operator’s license on April 26. Jerome Mayfi eld was issued a city citation for disorderly conduct at Monroe Heights Apartments on April 26.
On April 26, police also arrested Tara M. Matson for peace disturbance after receiving a report of a fi ght with a knife occurring in the 600 block of S. Monroe St. A juvenile subject also was taken into custody.
On April 26, police received a report of the city water tower in St. Jude’s Park leaking. The utility department employees were contacted and the leak was inspected.

St. Louis men arrested on federal firearms charges

Mark Robinson and Lequinton Gibbs have entered guilty pleas to federal fi rearms charges, Acting United States Attorney Michael W. Reap, Hannibal Police Chief Lyndell Davis and Ralls County Sheriff Paul Forney announced today.
According to the facts fi led with the court, on March 31, 2008, Robinson was driving a vehicle containing crack cocaine that he intended to distribute to others, and a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. When he got out of the vehicle, he fi red the gun while in possession of the crack cocaine. Gibbs was also in possession of a fi rearm.
Due to Gibb’s previous criminal history, he is forbidden by law to own or possess fi rearms. “These two men posed a danger to the public, especially in rural areas such as the one where they were arrested,” said Sheriff Forney. “We are happy to assist any agencies, especially when it involves serious crimes.” Mark A. Robinson, 33, St. Louis, 63137, pleaded guilty today to one felony count of discharging a fi rearm in furtherance of a drug traffi cking crime; Lequinton Tymel Gibbs, 28, Hannibal, pleaded guilty last week to one felony count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a fi rearm. Both defendants appeared before United States District Judge Rodney W. Sippel, St. Louis. Sentencings have been set for July 9 and July 10, 2009. ATF Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jeff Fulton stated that, “ATF remains committed to it’s partnerships with local law enforcement in investigating violent criminal behavior and ensuring these individuals are prosecuted to the fullest extent possible.”
Discharging a fi rearm in furtherance of a drug traffi cking crime carries a penalty range of 10 years to life in prison and/or fi nes up to $250,000; and being a previously convicted felon in possession of a fi rearm carries a penalty range of up to 10 years prison and/or a fi ne up to $250,000.
Reap commended the work on the case by the Hannibal Police Department, the Ralls County Sheriff’s Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and Assistant United States Attorney Ray Meyer, who is handling the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Offi ce.

Benefit for food pantry, business expo are Saturday
The Monroe City Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a mini-business expo in the UMB/See parking lot at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in conjunction with city-wide garage sales.
The Knights of Columbus and Masonic Lodge 64 will hold a joint chicken-que in the parking lot as well. Chicken and pork, with all of hte trimmings, will be available for sale with all proceeds going to the Monroe City Food Pantry.
