Fundraiser for Oak Hill School

Constructed in 1892, Oak Hill
School was the third school built in
the same location. Neighbors who
didn’t want the school location
changed from a few miles northeast
of the present location on Route T
in Ralls County had burned two
previous buildings. The reason the
present building survived is that
the school offi cials posted guards
to prevent the area residents from
burning the building.

The school is located about
seven miles south of Hannibal on
Missouri Route T at the junction of
Route N. It’s the fi rst building on
Oak Hill Road.
The Oak Hill School Community
Center has fallen into disrepair
over the years and desperately
needs restoration. The board and
members of the school society
have planned several fund-raising
activities for 2009. The fi rst fundraiser
will be an auction on the
school grounds.
The auction is scheduled for
May 9 with a rain date of May 23.
The auction will start at 5 p.m. R.C.
Harlow from New London will be
the auctioneer. Food and drink will
be available at the school.
The goods will comprise of old
collectibles, 100 cookbooks, camping
equipment, tools, kitchenware,
antique and new farm toys, kitchen
collectibles, a radial-arm saw,
a quilt rack, a wooden dollhouse
with an assortment of furniture,
merchandise and merchandise certifi
cates such as a new kitchen TV
from Ayers TV, McDonalds certifi -
cates, $20 merchandise certifi cate
from Haug Music and items too
numerous to mention.

Naturally, donations will be
generously accepted. The school
is sponsored by the Ralls County
Historical Society as a not-forprofi
t institution and as such, all
donations are tax deductible as
permitted by law.
On the last Saturday of each
month. area musicians gather at the
old school for fun, visiting and music.
The music starts at 6 p.m. and
the program is free. Food and soft
drinks are available for a contribution.
Musicians and the general
public are invited and encouraged
to join the fun.

Corps and Potterfield team up to spread word on safety

What did that truck say?

G.C. Potterfi eld Trucking and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at
Mark Twain Lake are partnering to spread the word about safe water
recreation. What better way to tell the Eastern half of the United States
about the Mark Twain Lake region than on the side or back of a Potterfi
eld truck!

What makes this sign so special? Most people don’t expect to see a
water safety message zipping past them at 55 mph. Maybe this slogan
will stick in their mind and lives will be saved. Thanks to Potterfi eld
Trucking for spreading the word.

For more information, please phone the Mark Twain Lake Project Offi
ce at 573-735-4097.
