Baptist Church completion slated for August

Beams go up on Baptist Church building

The new First Baptist Church
sanctuary and education complex
is scheduled for completion in late
August according to project manager
Carl Fleegel of Heimer Construction
in Taylor.

"We will have our place of worship
back," the Rev. Milton Baumgardner
said. Once the project is
completed, not only will the church
congregation see the benefi ts, but it
will also provide more opportunities
for community outreach.

Ever since a tornado demolished
the old facility on March 12, 2006,
members of the church community
have banned together in an effort
to restore their place of worship in
Monroe City.

"Things have been progressing
along good," Fleegel said. "We
were hampered by the cold temperature."
Fleegel said the frigid temperatures
haven't hindered progress too
much as his crew has been able to
work inside the church. That includes
electrical work, plumbing,
frame wall and dry wall and working
in the basement among other
indoor projects.

Fleegel said the project is currently
on schedule.
The fl oor for the sanctuary has
been poured and steel work is in
progress. Fleegel estimates the
classroom is approximately 65 percent
done and the sanctuary is between
25 and 30 percent fi nished.
Brick needs to be applied, the
old building shingles have been
replaced and the building has now
been re-roofed.
An elevator is a welcome improvement
to the facility. According
to Fleegel, the previous facility did
not have an elevator and that having
one now will enable disabled
people to get around the building
easier.
Ground was broken for the complex
in August 2008.
"It has been a nice progress
that has involved all of the church
members who have been involved,"
Fleegel said. "Everybody has had
some input."

Stamp prices go up again

Last week USPS announced
the governors have approved new
prices for mailing services, including
a two-cent increase in the price
of a First-Class Mail stamp to 44
cents. The new prices will go into
effect Monday, May 11.

Rising costs make the price adjustments
necessary — the increase
tracks the 2008 rate of infl ation.
“The Postal Service is not immune
to rising costs which are
affecting homes and businesses
across America today,” said PMG
Jack Potter. “Even with the increases,
the Postal Service continues to
offer some of the lowest postage
prices in the world.”

For the average household,
the First-Class Mail stamp price
change represents an additional $3
over the course of the year.
Meanwhile, the Monroe City
Post Offi ce is seeing some cutbacks
as well.

Postmaster John Chapman said
that local post offi ce boxholder
mail is now being put in the boxes
later in the morning due to cutbacks.
