Local pharmacy is burglarized
The Monroe City Police are offering a $200 cash reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals who broke into Gateway Pharmacy sometime early on Dec. 31.
Monroe City Police Chief Rick Stone said that an individual gained entry through a vent in the roof of the building at Mark Twain Center. The thief took drugs, Stone said, but left other prescriptions and cash untouched.
Stone said that individuals may contact him at 573-735-4431.
The reward is funded by a new council-approved fund designed to reward people giving tips leading to arrests.

Florida Folklife Festival scheduled
The Friends of Florida, Inc. met Monday evening Jan. 5 at the Mark Twain Shrine in Florida. The Florida Folklife Festival was scheduled for Aug. 8 - 9, 2009. Last year, organizers were unable to sponsor the festival due to unseasonal flooding. A new slate of officers was welcomed. They are President Adalaide Minor; Vice President Edwin Bush; Secretary Mary McCollum; and Treasurer Libby Williams. Topic discussions included informational meetings/membership drives to be held in the s urrounding towns, a future Founders’ Day Celebration; the trail which is being built in and around Florida, and informational brochures. The group would like to encourage anyone in the area interested in Florida and our Mark Twain heritage to attend the meetings and take part in the Friends’ activities. The group plans to meet with the Monroe County Historical Society at the Paris Library at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 23 and will have information for the public on Friends of Florida activities.
